facade noun 1. the face of a building, especially the principal or front face showing the most prominent architectural features 2. the way something or somebody appears on the surface, especially when that appearance is false or meant to deceive. An essential defining characteristic of architecture becomes a pejorative when used to describe people. The relationships between the outside of a building and its interior, and between someone's public face and the workings of his/her mind, are the subject of this gathering of recent art. Does the exterior of a building or a person's expression reveal or conceal its actual intent or content? Gender roles, racial stereotypes, architectural foils, and assumptions of all kinds come into play in this investigation. The work of a number of international artists express their points of view through video, photographs, both altered and unchanged, digital images, and off-set lithographs. Exhibiting artists include Janine Antoni, Luke Batten and Jonathan Sadler, Francis Cape, Jordi Colomer, Olafur Eliasson, Maria Friberg, Terence Gower, Roni Horn, Huang Yan, Wendy Jacob, Robert Lazzarini, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Gordon Matta-Clark, Jillian McDonald, Christopher Rauschenberg, Do-Ho Suh, and Michael Wolf. To further explore "the facade," faculty members from the areas of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Comparative Literature, Architecture, English, Cinema Studies, Social Psychology, and Visual Cognition and Human Performance have written interpretations of the concept from the point of view of their respective disciplines. These hand-outs will be available to the public in the exhibition. Curators: Judith Hoos Fox and Ginger Gregg Duggan
